Bitcoin surged above $85,000 on Monday, September 21, 2026, reaching its highest level since January as the world’s largest cryptocurrency extended its latest rally.
Bitcoin climbed as high as $85,412, its strongest price since January 29, according to market data cited by Barron’s. The cryptocurrency gained about 4.7% over 24 hours during Monday’s rally.
The latest advance comes after Bitcoin recovered sharply from last week’s weakness, when its price fell toward the $75,000 level amid concerns over US monetary policy and broader financial-market conditions.
The rally has also been supported by significant short-position liquidations. More than $262 million in Bitcoin short positions were reportedly liquidated within an hour as BTC crossed the $84,000 mark, adding further momentum to the price increase.
Other major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum, Solana and XRP, also recorded gains as the broader digital-asset market moved higher.
Institutional demand has provided another boost to Bitcoin sentiment. Strategy, one of the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holders, recently disclosed the purchase of 950 Bitcoin for approximately $75.7 million, taking its reported holdings to about 846,000 BTC.
Bitcoin’s move above $85,000 marks a significant recovery from its recent lows, although the cryptocurrency remains below its all-time high. Investors are now watching whether BTC can sustain its latest gains and extend the rally further as market conditions evolve.
