For some Nairobi women, going to the gym is no longer just about losing weight or building muscle. It is also about finding a space where they can exercise without feeling watched, judged or uncomfortable.
The growing popularity of women-only fitness facilities is changing the way some women approach exercise in the city.
For Muslim women, privacy can be particularly important. At Lantern Life Fitness, a women-only facility, the idea grew from the founder’s desire for a fitness environment that accommodated her faith, clothing and personal values. The facility opened in January 2025 and operates on a booking system, limiting the number of women using the space at a time.
The concept is broader than religious considerations.
For some women, a female-only gym provides freedom to exercise without worrying about unwanted attention, body-shaming or feeling self-conscious about how they look while working out.
The model also allows fitness providers to tailor programmes around women’s needs, including personal training, nutrition guidance and specialised exercise.
Lantern, for example, offers group sessions as well as personal training and nutrition services. Its environment is deliberately designed around privacy and tranquillity rather than the conventional loud-gym atmosphere.
The trend comes at a time when more Kenyans are being encouraged to make physical activity part of everyday life. Yet access to exercise is not simply about having a gym nearby. People also need environments in which they feel safe and comfortable enough to return consistently.
For women who have previously avoided gyms because of privacy concerns, female-only facilities could therefore remove one of the barriers to regular exercise.
The bigger lesson is that healthy living is personal. What motivates one person to exercise may discourage another.
As Nairobi’s fitness industry expands, the demand may increasingly be not just for more gyms, but for spaces designed around the different social, cultural and personal realities of those using them.
