NAIROBI — Absa Bank Kenya has confirmed Yusuf Omari as its managing director and chief executive officer, giving the lender permanent leadership after a period of transition.
Omari, who had been serving as interim chief executive, has spent more than two decades with the bank and is expected to lead its next phase of growth amid intensifying competition in Kenya’s financial services industry.
He joined the institution in 2004, when it operated as Barclays Bank Kenya, and has held several senior positions during his career, including chief financial officer.
His extensive experience within the bank gives him a detailed understanding of its operations and transformation from Barclays to Absa, following the rebranding of the business in 2020.
Omari previously served as interim chief executive after the departure of Jeremy Awori in 2022 before returning to his role as chief financial officer.
His latest appointment follows the departure of Abdi Mohamed, who had led the bank since 2023.
The leadership change comes as commercial banks face increasing competition from digital lenders, fintech companies, mobile money platforms and other technology-driven financial services.
Omari will be expected to maintain the bank’s growth momentum while strengthening its digital offering, customer experience and competitiveness in the Kenyan market.
The banking sector has also been dealing with changing customer expectations, increased regulatory requirements and pressure to improve access to affordable financial services.
Omari’s background in finance and strategy is expected to provide continuity as Absa Kenya pursues its wider regional and digital growth ambitions.
He holds an MBA in strategy from Strathmore Business School and a degree from the University of Nairobi. He is also a member of professional accounting and internal audit bodies.
His appointment represents a return to permanent leadership for the bank following a period of transition.
For Absa Kenya, the challenge will now be to translate that continuity into sustained growth while responding to rapid changes in how individuals and businesses access and use financial services.
