From premium transport and corporate mobility to digital booking, Isura Car Hire and Tours founder Christopher Isura is building a business around changing customer expectations in Kenya’s car rental industry
Kenya’s car hire industry is evolving as tourism, corporate travel and demand for convenient mobility create opportunities for businesses offering more than vehicle rentals.
Customers increasingly seek reliable transport, flexible booking options and personalised experiences, from airport transfers and executive travel to weddings and luxury occasions.
For Chris Isura, founder and chief executive officer of Isura Car Hire and Tours, meeting these expectations has become central to his entrepreneurial strategy.
With a background in media, sales and marketing, Isura entered business with skills that helped him identify opportunities and build customer relationships. His decision to pursue entrepreneurship full-time came after a single transaction earned him approximately KSh50,000, equivalent to his former monthly salary.
“That was a come-to-Jesus moment for me,” he recalls.
More than a decade into the business, his focus has shifted from securing individual bookings to building systems that can support growth across Kenya’s car hire and travel market.
Competing beyond the vehicle
In the luxury car hire business, the vehicle is only part of the product. Reliability, safety, service and the ability to respond when things go wrong can determine whether customers return.
Isura says the company differentiates itself through round-the-clock customer support, particularly when clients experience breakdowns, accidents or other emergencies.
The business serves customers seeking self-drive and chauffeur-driven rentals, airport transfers, tours, wedding transport and executive mobility.
Its service model reflects a broader industry challenge: maintaining consistent customer experiences while managing vehicles, drivers, maintenance and operational costs.
For Isura, customer support is a competitive advantage in a market where clients need dependable transport for business engagements, travel and special occasions.
The company also works with partners in different parts of Kenya, allowing it to coordinate car hire services beyond Nairobi, including destinations such as Diani, Turkana, Isiolo, Marsabit and Moyale.
The approach expands its geographical reach without depending exclusively on a company-owned fleet in every destination.
The economics of running a fleet
Behind the appeal of luxury vehicles lies a capital-intensive business.
Operators must manage vehicle acquisition, financing, insurance, maintenance and staff costs while ensuring that vehicles generate sufficient revenue.
Isura says access to bank asset financing has helped the company acquire vehicles, but the model also exposes operators to financial pressure when demand falls.
The Covid-19 pandemic illustrated this vulnerability. Travel restrictions sharply reduced bookings even as businesses continued to face financial obligations.
The company had to engage lenders and seek repayment moratoriums to navigate the disruption.
The experience changed his approach to financial management.
Having initially struggled with accounting and money management, Isura learnt the importance of retaining profits during peak seasons to sustain operations during quieter months.
His experience highlights a key consideration for entrepreneurs entering the luxury car rental market: revenue growth must be matched by prudent cash-flow management and realistic fleet utilisation.
Digital platforms as the next frontier
Isura’s next growth strategy centres on technology.
He says the company has invested in developing a digital marketplace that connects car rental providers, hotels and travellers through a single platform.
The concept allows rental operators in different towns to list vehicles, while accommodation providers can showcase rooms and other services. Customers can then make reservations for transport, accommodation and airport transfers.
For travellers, the proposition is convenience. For smaller operators, it offers an opportunity to reach customers beyond their immediate markets.
The model could also help address a persistent challenge in fragmented service industries: connecting customers to reliable providers across multiple destinations.
However, its long-term success will depend on customer adoption, service consistency, technology reliability and the ability to maintain trust across a network of independent providers.
Recognition and the road ahead
As Chris Isura prepares to receive a Young Entrepreneur Award at the East African Business Leadership Awards 2026, his journey reflects the demands of building a business in a competitive, capital-intensive industry.
His experience combines customer service, financial resilience, strategic partnerships and investment in digital distribution.
For Kenya’s luxury car hire industry, the opportunity extends beyond adding more vehicles to the road. It lies in building reliable mobility solutions that respond to the needs of tourists, businesses and individual customers.
For Isura, the next phase is about turning years of operational experience into a scalable platform that connects transport and hospitality services across the country.
