NAIROBI, Kenya — Mauritius-based investment firm Monarch Capital Limited is set to acquire a 60 percent stake in De La Rue Kenya after receiving approval from the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK).
The transaction will see the Kenyan government retain a 40 percent stake in the company through the National Treasury, giving the State a significant minority position in the currency-printing business.
The approval clears the way for Monarch Capital to become the majority shareholder, marking a significant change in the ownership structure of De La Rue Kenya.
De La Rue Kenya has historically played a strategic role in the country’s security-printing industry, including the production of banknotes. The company operates within a highly sensitive sector where security, technology and production capacity are critical to national interests.
The government’s decision to retain a 40 percent stake means the State will continue to have a substantial interest in the company even after the change in majority ownership.
The acquisition also places Monarch Capital in a stronger position within Kenya’s specialised security-printing industry, potentially opening the way for new investment, technology and business expansion.
The transaction is subject to the completion of the remaining applicable processes before the new ownership structure takes effect.
