There are waterfalls that are beautiful to look at. Then there is Victoria Falls.
Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “The Smoke That Thunders”, the waterfall sits on the Zambezi River along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The first encounter is often unforgettable. Water plunges over the edge in a massive curtain while spray rises into the air, creating a mist that can be seen from a distance.
But the waterfall itself is only the beginning.
Victoria Falls has become a base for a wide range of experiences along the Zambezi. Visitors can explore the river by boat, take guided walks, enjoy wildlife experiences or seek out more adventurous activities.
The surrounding area also offers opportunities to see elephants, buffalo, hippos and other wildlife, making it possible to combine a waterfall visit with a safari experience.
For adventurous travellers, the Zambezi provides an entirely different attraction. Rafting and other river activities offer a more energetic way to experience the landscape.
Yet there is also a quieter side to Victoria Falls.
Sunset cruises allow visitors to drift along the river while watching the sky change colour. On land, local communities, markets and cultural experiences provide a glimpse into life beyond the tourist centre.
The destination works particularly well because it combines several types of travel in one place.
It can be a nature trip, an adventure holiday, a wildlife experience or simply a few days spent taking in one of Africa’s great natural spectacles.
The waterfall may be the reason to arrive.
But it is the river, wildlife, people and sense of adventure around it that can make travellers stay longer.
